On April 27, the Department of Journalism and Philology of the FРSС of Sumy State University met with representatives of the National Council of Ukraine on Television and Radio Broadcasting headed by Ukrainian journalist and TV presenter Olga Gerasimyuk.

The delegation also included members of the National Council Olena Nytsko and Oleksandr Burmagin, as well as the representative of the National Council in the Sumy region, head of the employers’ council for the specialty  061 “Journalism” at Sumy State University Larisa Yakubenko.

The students showed great interest in the meeting, which was reflected both in the number of attendees and in the questions and discussion statements.

Olha Gerasimyuk touched on the topic of professional standards of a journalist's work, talked about her own first steps in the profession.

Oleksandr Burmagin answered questions related to the specifics of the law “On Media”. He also emphasized the differences between the Ukrainian and European systems of legal regulation of the activities of the media and individual journalists.

Olena Nytsko told the students about the importance of critical thinking skills and media literacy. In particular, she focused attention on the formation of the evidence base on the crimes of the aggressor country, which is carried out by the National Council on Television and Radio Broadcasting together with state law enforcement agencies.

There were many questions from the students, they were interested in what transformations should take place in Ukrainian journalism so that it meets European standards, how the new law “On Media” will affect the work of sports resources, whether the new law regulates the activities of Telegram channels, how often it is possible to bring journalists to justice for violating the code of journalistic ethics, etc.

After the meeting with the students, the representatives of the National Council got acquainted with the work of the Department of Journalism and Philology of the FРSС of Sumy State University, talked with the rector of the university Vasyl Karpusheya and the head of the department Volodymyr Sadivnychy, inspected the material and technical base for training journalists.

The Department of Journalism and Philology of the FРSС of Sumy State University once again proved that #media_space_leads_to_the_universe! And even on the border, Ukrainian journalistic education is developing and creating a new future.
