2004

The Department of Journalism and Philology was created on June, 1 at Sumy State University.

Then, we had only one specialty– Journalism, Bachelor’s degree.

We had the first intake of students.

 

2008

The first graduation of Journalism Bachelor students.

 

2009

The radio studio started working at the department.

 

2011

The Master’s degree course in Journalism was introduced.

 

2012

The first Master students graduated.

The post-graduate course in Journalism was introduced.

The Bachelor’s degree course in Advertising and PR and the Master’s degree course in Media Communications were introduced.

  

2013

An advanced educational TV-Studio was opened on January, 30 (today it is called StudTV “The 11th Floor”).

 

 

2014

The first Youth Festival of Advertising “The eighth colour” was held.

 

2015

The first post-graduate students of our department got their PhD.

We organized our first summer school (in the framework of the EU project Tempus IV “Cross-Media and Qualitative Journalism” (CuQ)).

 

 

2016

The first graduation of Bachelor students in Advertisement and PR.

The Master’s degree course in this specialty was introduced.

 

2017

The Center of Media and Information literacy was opened (with the support of Media Development Fund of the U.S. Embassy in Ukraine and the NGO "Medikomcompass").

 International school of bloggers and public journalists was organized (with the support of the NGO "Institute of Regional Press Development" (Kyiv) and "Interlink Academy" (Hamburg, Germany)).

The cooperation with the Higher Linguistic School in Częstochowa (Republic of Poland) was started. German journalists conducted trainings within the EU project Association4U.

 

2018

Summer school of bloggers and public journalists was organized (the support of the NGO "Institute of Regional Press Development" (Kyiv) and "Interlink Academy" (Hamburg, Germany)).

Three lecturers of the department – Associate Professor Yaroslav Yanenko, senior lecturers Olena Yevtushenko and Yulia Kozyr – became the winners of the competition "The best lecturer in the eyes of students".

Student-journalist Karina Khachataryan received scholarship of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine.

A series of trainings was conducted with the support of the NGO "Medirocompass", Media Development Fund of the U.S. Embassy in Ukraine.

  

2019

We started to take part in the international project ЕRASMUS+ KA 2 «DESTIN» – «Journalism Education for Democracy in Ukraine».

Summer school of young journalists was organized, which is a joint project of Interlink Academy (Hamburg, Germany), Sumy State University and the NGO "Medikompas".

 A contest of newspapers, radio programs and sites of schools of Sumy region was organized and held (jointly with the NGO "Medirocompass" in partnership with the NGO "Sumy Press Club", Department of Education and Science of the Sumy regional state administration).

 Trainings for the trainers were conducted by the program "Media literacy in the regions of Ukraine", which is a joint project of the Intek Academy (Germany, Hamburg) and "Medikompas" (Sumy).

A meeting of the scientific and methodical commission on journalism was held on the basis of the department. The issues of the new principles of higher education for students of the specialty "Journalism" and their practical implementation were talked over.

International scientific conference "Between the farmstead and the world: the cultural mission of Panteleimon Kulish".

 Associate Professor Yaroslav Yanenko received the first-class certificate of the winner of the General University Competition "The best scientific and pedagogical employees of SSU".

 Three lecturers of the department – Associate Professor Inna Gavrylyuk, senior lecturers Olena Yevtushenko and Yulia Kozyr – won the competition "The best lecturer in the eyes of students".

 

TODAY

Every year, students-journalists take the first places at Ukrainian Olympiads in Journalism, Advertising and Public Relations, Ukrainian competitions of students’ research works in Social Communications, Ukrainian language and literature, Publishing and Editing, etc.

We maintain contacts with the Institute of Journalism at Kyiv Taras Shevchenko University, the universities of Poland, Germany, Sweden, Russia, as well as the mass media of Sumy region, so that our students and teachers could share knowledge with other specialists.
