During June 2023, teachers, graduate students and students of the Department of Journalism and Philology of the FРSC of Sumy State University studied the course “Fake News, Fake Science and Critical Thinking: What should I believe?” at the International Summer School of the University of Liverpool. The project was implemented within the framework of the cooperation agreement of Sumy State University with a sister university from Great Britain.

Training took place online. The leader of the module, Professor Philip Leakey, is a media expert who specializes in finding fakes in journalistic materials and scientific publications. The main tasks of the course were: to develop the ability to think critically, analyzing facts, judgments and fakes in the media text; learn to counter propaganda and disinformation; update knowledge about the rules of writing quality scientific articles, etc.

According to the results of the studies, after defending the final thesis, assistants of the Department of Journalism and Philology of the FРSC of Sumy State University Olena Ishchenko and Maryna Sadivnycha, postgraduate students Tetyana Mostipan and Olga Savotchenko, students Arina Stolbtsova and Zakhar Yuvko received Certificate of Participation.

Maryna Sadivnycha noted:

– The summer school from the University of Liverpool was an interesting experience, because it allowed me to learn new tools for working with Internet news, test my own knowledge, and improve my English communication skills. Special thanks to our teacher – Mr. Philip. Understanding that he has an audience with different levels of training and knowledge of the language, he tried to convey information as simply and clearly as possible, communicated with the course participants in such a way that each of us felt comfortable.

– Studying in Liverpool left pleasant and warm memories. During the 2 weeks of training, we developed an extremely close relationship with our teacher Philip, who explained the material in a clear and accessible way. It was interesting to carry out a cultural exchange and write my own paper at the end of the course, – Zakhar Yuvko shared his impressions.

Let’s not forget that constant self-improvement and enrichment of knowledge is the way that the #media_space_leads_to_the_universe.
