Write a picture with sound. At the same time without using words, images, movements. This task was solved by third-year students majoring in “Journalism” and “Advertising and Public Relations” of the Department of Journalism and Philology, Faculty of FPSC SSU.

Painting with sound was the core of practical classes during the study of the disciplines “Radio Production” and “Radio Advertising” (tutors – Inna Gavrilyuk and Raisa Stoyan).

According to the task, students had to retell any story exclusively with the help of sounds and noise. After all, voice, music, specific sounds and natural noises are an important and eloquent audio means of conveying information in radio broadcasting. Understanding all the author’s techniques, mastering not only the word, but also the sound sequence allows you to create an invisible trusting connection between the radio journalist and the audience. Feel how it happens, and is the purpose of the lesson.

Usually, to illustrate the reports, students selected some super-original sounds from the environment, recording them on smartphones. The future media people were also impressed by the unexpected plots of the stories themselves. Anatoliy Serdyuk (ZhT-91) offered, by the way, a detective story about a bank robbery.

Advertiser Liana Okhrimenko (ZhT-92rk) created a story about a car accident: “I liked the exercise. Despite the fact that words play a very important role, sound is no less important: with its help you can not only convey information, but also create the appropriate feelings and emotions”.

It is worth noting that mostly all the tasks received positive evaluations, because the radio listeners – fellow classmates – usually guessed which messages the authors were trying to convey to them.

The combination of theoretical knowledge and practical skills in the classroom is the main feature of the training of mass media at the Department of Journalism and Philology, FPSC SSU.
