Journalism is a social institution designed to provide society with comprehensive and as more objective information as possible about the world, necessary for the optimal functioning of other social institutions and society as a whole. Journalism is also an actualization of social groups’ outlook by means of selecting facts, assessments, and comments, which are topical and significant nowadays. Journalism is also understood as a practice of collecting and interpreting information about events, themes, trends of modern life, its representation in different genres and forms, and further transmission.

What subjects will I study?

The program on "Journalism" includes courses in Communication Technologies, Mass Communication and Information Theory, Theory and Methodology of Journalistic Creativity, Photojournalism, Modern Media Text, Journalism Genres, Reporter's Work, Television and Radio Production, Editing, New Media, Newspaper and Magazine Production, Theory and Methodology of Social Communications, Information Policy and Security, Audiovisual Media, and others.

What knowledge and skills will I get?

At the Department of Journalism and Philology of SSU students are professionally trained to create texts, photos, radio and video stories, programs for traditional (press, radio, television) and online media. Our students study communicative technologies of influence, legal and ethical principles of journalism, and master new technologies of journalist activity. The emphasis in the educational process is placed on bringing up socially responsible, erudite journalists who can investigate thoroughly and think critically.

What will I be able to work?

Our graduates work in printed media, on radio, television, in Internet editions, news agencies, press services of commercial and public organizations, political parties, and government structures. There are journalists, presenters, editors of mass media departments, chief editors, PR specialists, press officers, scriptwriters, media trainers, lecturers and scientists among them.
