On June 13-17, Tetyana Kovalyova, Associate Professor of the Department of Journalism and Philology, IFSС SSU, as a participant in the educational project “Journalism in Wartime”, took part in an educational trip to Prague.

The project is being implemented with the support of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic and is designed for teachers of journalism disciplines.

On the first day of the trip, the participants talked with the Executive Director of the Association for International Affairs Vit Dostal and the expert of the think tank “European Values” David Stulyak, coordinator of international projects of the AMO in Ukraine Zdenka Vagnerova. The most important topics of discussion were the war in Ukraine, the global support of Ukrainians, as well as the role and place of journalists in the fight against Russian attackers and against Russian propaganda.

Various aspects of the coverage of these or secondary topics during the war were touched upon by the participants of the trip at an informal meeting with representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic.

During their stay in Prague, Ukrainian teachers had the opportunity to talk to practicing Czech journalists, who shared the highlights of their work in the professions. The peculiarities of military journalism were discussed in particular with Mariana Drach, director of the Ukrainian edition of “Radio Liberty”. Co-founder, journalist, editor Jan Molaček, who co-founded the newspaper “Denik N”, presented a journalistic project and talked with Petra Prokhazkova about the specifics of working during the war in Ukraine.

Interesting was the experience of the public broadcaster “Czech Television”, which was shared by the program director of all news and socio-political programs Zdenek Shamal. Ondrej Soukup, a journalist with the editorial board of “Gospodarski Novyny”, and Oleksa Livinsky, a journalist and former editor of the Czech Ukrainian magazine “Porohy”, also spoke to the project participants.

It is worth noting that various aspects of the coverage of the Russian-Ukrainian war in the information space, the lives of Ukrainians and the fate of Ukraine are the most painful questions that Czech journalists are looking for answers to.

It is especially important to emphasize the importance of understanding the specifics of understanding the topics of war and the peculiarities of their presentation in the information space by young journalists. Therefore, emphasizing that #Mediaspace_leads_to_the_universe, we are constantly adopting the best European practices in journalism.
