On September 22, in a practical lesson on the subject “Theory, Methods and Practice of Journalistic Creativity”, sophomores discussed the prospects for the introduction of the Latin alphabet in Ukraine.

Keeping an eye on the pulse of life events of the state, promptly responding to acute social issues – one of the main features of students and teachers of the Department of Journalism and Philology, Faculty of  FPSC SSU. Therefore, it is natural that the recent statement of the Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine Oleksiy Danilov regarding the transition of Ukraine from Cyrillic to Latin provoked heated discussions among journalists.

In accordance with this topical topic, second-year students, group ZhT-01, in a practical lesson on “Theory, methods and practice of journalism” trainee teacher, graduate student Olexandr Gorda was invited to prepare journalistic presentations on “Ukraine’s transition from Cyrillic as an alphabetic system, in Latin”.

To complete the practical task, students were divided into four editorial groups and a volunteer who had to create a unique video, visualizing their own results of the media survey on the topic of the lesson. Each of the groups was engaged in a separate type of work: the first – looking for experts, the second – working on information requests, the third – looking for sources of information on the preconditions for Ukraine’s adoption of the Cyrillic alphabet in the, century, further history of the use of various alphabets for centuries. the former Soviet Union and Eastern Europe on the introduction of Latin.

We spoke with representatives of all groups to find out their views on the practical significance of information retrieval for the overall research of the topic. Myroslav Derevyanko, a student who actually created the unique video, said:

– I had the task to analyze the problem of Latinization of the Ukrainian language, to interview national media by phone, to find out their views on the relevance of the topic. There were no problems in preparing the material, the teacher’s instructions helped to avoid mistakes.

– Our team, – said Tatiana Sergienko, – was given the task to compile a list of candidates for the role of experts to clarify the issue of Ukraine’s transition from Cyrillic to Latin. As a result, 12 people were selected who, in our opinion, will be able to give an exclusive comment, objectively and impartially cover the issue of Ukraine’s transition from Cyrillic to Latin from various aspects, outlining the negative and positive sides of such changes.

Student Arina Stolbtsova told about the type of work of her group as follows:

– We prepared information requests to various structures: Sumy City Council, public organizations, religious groups, parties. As a result, 5 information materials were created. Being able to create such requests is very important for future journalists, because it is one of the key skills of working with sources.

As a result of the practical lesson, students learned to choose experts, visualize the information obtained, improved skills in working with sources and writing inquiries to NGOs and more.

The combination of theoretical knowledge and practical skills in the classroom is the main feature of the training of mass media at the Department of Journalism and Philology, Faculty of FPSC SSU.
