The work of the selection committee of the journalism competition “The Honor of the Profession 2023” has ended, in which Alla Fedorуna, an associate professor of the Department of Journalism and Philology of the FРSС of Sumy State University, Honored Journalist of Ukraine, is participating for the third year in a row.

– For two years, I worked in the selection committee, which got to know and sifted through the interviews submitted for the competition, – says Alla Fedorina. – This year, I wanted to get to know the works in another nomination, so the organizing committee took into account this wish and I worked with the materials submitted to the “Best Reportage” competition. The next stage: the materials selected by the members of the selection committee will be read by the members of the jury, who will make the final selection. And the winners should be announced in May.

A total of 1,037 materials were submitted to the competition, of which 871 went to the main nominations: the best interview – 193, the best report – 227, the best news coverage of a high-profile event – 91, the best analysis – 134, the best investigation – 67, the best journalism – 159 works. There are also special nominations.

That is, it was the reports that turned out to be the most, so Alla Fedorina had to read-listen-view 75 materials in less than two weeks. And select 20-30 of them.

– The materials were different both in terms of volume and skill, – says Alla Fedorуna. – They were quite short, like a video story for news, but for some reason this video story was sent to a reporting competition. The longest video material had a duration of almost one and a half hours. I started reading it already in the evening, thinking: such a long material, I will watch some interviews at a faster speed. And I started watching and forgot about time, because it was such a piece of life, such a sincere work of reporters, that I really felt the main effect that a report should create – the illusion of being there, at the place of events. It was war in its various manifestations, so sometimes it was simply difficult to accept the materials without tears. But I was convinced once again what good journalists there are in Ukraine.

The professional competition of journalists “The Honor of the Profession” has existed in Ukraine since 2010 and is built on the same principles as the best professional media competitions in the world, such as, for example, the Pulitzer Prize. You can find out about the competition, its nominations and requirements for them at the link https://journalismaward.in.ua. And students should already understand today that each of them can become a participant and winner of a prestigious professional competition. Of course, it will be within the power of those who master professional skills and understand the ways in which the #Mediaspace_leads_to_the_universe.
